Condolence & Memory Journal

He always always inspired me to speak my truth. That is what inspired me to
write my upcoming Autobiography. Raw and uncut. I hope I make you proud, Mr. O.

We grew up with Hilton as children in Southwest Washington, DC. Hilton was always a gentleman or gentlechild. A Christian from the heart he always showed God's love to all. We went to Zion Baptist Church just a few doors from the Overton home. The parents would send all of the children to the church down the street for Sunday School. God's love was taught and shown through Hilton's actions and words. Rest in peace until we meet again. Tyrone and Oceola Young Briscoe...

One of the most inspiring teachers I had at Banneker. He prepared me for senior English with F. Mulcahey. An achiever, indeed. Peace and love to the family.

Uncle Brother, you were one of the best examples of what a "Man" should be! Growing up you provided so many of your nieces & nephews with a strong educational foundation and supported us in everything we did as long as "Those Grades Were Straight"! I'll always remember our conversation we had right before I graduated High School..."Nephew, your about to step into the real world now, life doesn't care what you've done before this point, so go and make that Overton name proud." - I hope I've done just that Unk!!! Give Grandma & Grandpa Overton and Aunt Katherine a Big hug from me!!!

Mr. Overton was a brilliant and dedicated professional. Every time I spoke with him I learned something. Compassionate, humanitarian, integrity are just a few terms that come to mind to describe Mr. Overton. He was a wonderful mentor to me and many others. I am grateful to have worked alongside him. He was dedicated to the Achievers!

You and Mr. Mulcahy are the reason I was so very proud to sit on Jim Lehrer's Newsdesk at the NewsHour in my late 20's and early 30's as his Script Production Assistant & now today I am a successful small business owner. You 2 were a key in laying my education & hard work ethic foundation. Thank you sir. Rejoice in Heaven Mr. O. Job well done. You died on my 50th birthday & I take that as a torch passing to your BAB class of 88 students. Torch received sir, we will run the 2nd half of our race as you did. Thank you for all you sowed into us. My condolences to your family. Love you always.

Hilton and I were friends and colleagues at Benjamin Banneker HS for many years. He was a great teacher, father, husband, and above all, a great human being. That he was loved by the students he taught is shown by their moving tributes posted on Facebook. He will be missed. Requiescat in Pace, old friend.
